Complete Stories, by Kurt Vonnegut

Here for the first time is the complete short fiction of one of the twentieth century's foremost imaginative geniuses. More than half of Vonnegut's output was short fiction, and never before has the world had occasion to wrestle with it all together. Organized thematically—"War," "Women," "Science," "Romance," "Work Ethic versus Fame and Fortune," "Behavior," "The Band Director" (those stories featuring Lincoln High's band director and nice guy George Hemholtz), and "Futuristic"—these ninety-eight stories were written from 1941 to 2007, and include those Vonnegut published in magazines and collected in Welcome to the Monkey House, Bagombo Snuff Box, and other books; here for the first time five previously unpublished stories; as well as a handful of others that were published online and read by few. During his lifetime Vonnegut published fewer than half of the stories he wrote, his agent telling him in 1958 upon the rejection of a particularly strong story, "Save it for the collection of your works which will be published someday when you become famous. Which may take a little time."       Selected and introduced by longtime Vonnegut friends and scholars Dan Wakefield and Jerome Klinkowitz, Complete Stories puts Vonnegut's great wit, humor, humanity, and artistry on full display. An extraordinary literary feast for new readers, Vonnegut fans, and scholars alike.

There's very little an Amazon reviewer can add -- in writing about the stories herein -- that hasn't been said, and observed, already. Vonnegut is an icon, and his stories -- "Harrison Bergeron", "Unready to Wear", "2BRO2B", "EPICAC", "The Big Space (eff word)" (that's correct: Amazon word scanning has become so 3rd Reich-like I can't even print an approximation of the word, though it's a proper title) and even the undiscovered tale, "The Drone King" -- are always entertaining and often insightful. What SHOULD be said is that at least ONE purported expert and editor came to the job with all of the expertise of a elementary student.Jerome Klinkowitz -- who touts himself as a specialist in all things Vonnegut -- has done a shabby job of editorial enlightenment. In this sort of collection, the prefaces and afterwords and introductions, written BY the editors, about the stories, are highly important. They can provide background and information about the author's state of mind, etc. Yet, Klinkowitz, in his introductory note about "The Big Space (procreation)" writes, "one has to ponder his motives in contributing a story (upon request) to science fiction writer [Klinkowitiz's inaccurate description, not mine] Harlan Ellison's anthology..." Klinkowitz, in attempt to be humorous -- or hip?-- points out that Vonnegut's contribution to Ellison's anthology is odd because Vonnegut, by that time, had repudiated the field of Science Fiction (what he fails to note is that Vonnegut continued, throughout his career, to write fiction that qualified as fantasy or science fiction). Klinkowitze also fails to note that several notable writers contributed to that lowly science fiction anthology, chief among them, Ursula K. LeGuin, whose body of work -- like Vonnegut's -- is being collected in volumes by the Library of America. In fact, "the Big Space (you know what)" is included in the first Library of America volume devoted to Vonnegut's works (mostly novels, with a handful of short stories). The thing is, if one IS an expert on all things Vonnegut, and if one is a thinking human, one should be able to not only learn about those motives -- via Vonnegut's writings, as well as writings by Harlan Ellison -- one, as an editor, should provide the reader with that knowledge. In his introduction to Vonnegut's story in AGAIN, DANGEROUS VISIONS, Ellison pointed out that he formed a friendship with Vonnegut after he told Knox Burger -- an icon in publishing, as editor and agent -- that Burger SHOULD, in fact, publish a book of short stories by Kurt Vonnegut (at the time, the best known Vonnegut book published was THE SIRENS OF TITAN). And when he contributed his short story to Ellison's anthology, Vonnegut was only just becoming internationally famous, having recently published SLAUGHTER HOUSE-FIVE (he hadn't yet published BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS, which came out a year later, and was a number one bestseller). The aforementioned story, by the way, is a classic, cynical fable -- in true Vonnegut fashion -- depicting a future in which humans have managed to screw up everything. So it goes.

One of the greatest — and most wonderfully eccentric — writers of the 20th century. This brick of a book is a must-have for anyone who wants to witness the growth of an artist from baby-days through mastery. It’s awesome!

Many of these stories are hilarious and all are highly imaginative. The stories are divided into sections according to themes. Although only one short section is labeled "science fiction," I would describe many of the other stories in the book as science fiction, though Vonnegut apparently did not like to be labeled as a science fiction author. This is a lengthy book that will provide an enjoyable read for many days.

Kurt Vonnegut is one of the best modern writers of the twentieth and twenty first centuries.

Kurt Vonnegut is one of my favorite authors and I was so happy to find a collection of his complete stories to complement the rest of my collection of his books. Great buy!
