After reading Rachel Cruze’s new book, Love Your Life, Not Theirs, I am completely ready to fall in love with my life all over again! This book was just the motivation I needed to hear as we continue to push through our own journey to debt-free living. It reminded me to focus on building up my own life and values, and not to gaze on what someone else appears to have. Many of the main money principles in the book are the same as those founded by her father, but Rachel aims them at values and situations present in today’s culture. She addresses some of the major issues that social media has on our mindset and challenges us to do things differently. I felt myself making changes in my usual social media routine and in other areas of my life immediately after reading this book. I am so thankful to Rachel and her ministry for what my future brings by making these small changes now!The book truly reads like a conversation you would have with a close friend. I almost felt like I was talking directly with Rachel as she poured out her humor to keep the mood light and I loved her anecdotes from her own life sprinkled throughout the book. She writes like a friend who is not afraid to show you some tough love and tell you the truth when you need to hear it. Rachel is also vulnerable with her own struggles and weaknesses when it comes to money. There were definitely moments I felt some convictions with my struggles, but I felt encouraged to do better and keep trying to build the life I want to live now and in the future. The principles are easy to incorporate in your life and Rachel explains them all so well! I can’t wait to share the principles I have learned with my friends and family to help them live the lives they love as well!Note: I received this book as part of a pre-launch book club.
The fear of missing out (or FOMO) is what keeps people my age flicking furiously through our social media news feeds. We see friends posing in front of sparkling new SUVs, wearing Mouse ears in front of the castle with their kids, and dipping their toes in the sand on the beach. Then we go out and spend ourselves into oblivion just trying to feel adequate to our frenemies. What if there was more to life? What about instead of focusing on what we can get/buy/take, we focused on what we can build and give? That’s the premise of 'Love Your Life, Not Theirs.' As Rachel puts it in Chapter 14, “The endgame…is not to buy so much stuff for ourselves that it fills up our garages and rented storage units. The real goal of building wealth is to leave a measurable and meaningful mark on the people around you.â€Rachel’s conversational tone makes it a pleasant read. I laughed at her $20 bowl of guacamole, and identified with her plea to parents not to use money to show our children love. She talks about real relationship issues (e.g. competitive spending: it’s a real thing!), parenting, investing, and easing into giving. The book lacks the judgmental tone of many financial books written by older authors, or those that only focus on numbers. This quick read would make a great gift for the Millennial in your life to introduce them to sound financial habits, especially if they are a recent graduate (HS or college), newlywed, or new parent. (I received an advanced copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.)
This is a very easy to read book, but I was a bit disappointed in the makeup. I have not read any other Rachel Cruz or Dave Ramsey books but I am familiar with the baby steps they preach. This book was a regurgitation of those steps with a little story telling in between. I enjoyed the personal stories about Rachel and her husband, but I really didn't learn much more financially than I already knew going in.
I am a big Dave Ramsey ,so if you listen to his show and purchased any of his books there is nothing new in this book.If you have never read any of Dave Ramsey"s books then I recommend this book.
Disappointing...was pretty much just a reiteration of all she learned from her father. I would suggest reading "Total Money Makeover" instead, as it is more thorough and contains many examples.
This book has a lot of practical applications. The book was an easy read. I had a lot of meditative moments. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to live a better life and not compare yours to someone else's. It was like she was reading my life story to me. I had a lot of aha moments. Once I started reading I couldn't find it it down or when I had to I couldn't wait to begin again. It was very inspirational! I will put this book on my repeat read again to keep me focused on the big picture and not to give up this journey! I put social media down so that I wouldn't feel the need to do things due to what others were doing or fueling bad behaviors because of this book as that is what I found myself doing. I'm glad I listened to her dad's show and he mentioned this book!
Let me preface this by saying I'm a huge Dave Ramsey fan. Rachel's book has been heavily advertised on Dave's show and I've been looking forward to reading it for months. I thought Rachel's book would address how to remain content with your life when everyone else's life is constantly paraded on social media. How does one remain jealousy free? How do I stay content to live in a smaller home, take frugal vacations while watching others take extravagant ones, and buy secondhand clothes while watching friends buy designer? However, her book didn't address contentment at all. She regurgitated the baby steps from Dave's teachings and told the same stories we've heard for years. Although she tried to be relatable, since she has never been in debt or owned a credit card, her references fell flat. If you're new to Dave Ramsey, skip this book and read The Total Money Makeover.
I have been listening to the Audible version. Really did not care for Rachel's voice in the beginning but have gotten used to it because I love the principles she has. Piggybacking off her dad Dave Ramsey, I like her idea of the clip instead of money envelopes. This works better for us ladies whose bags are already full of too much stuff! This is a great book to help you stop living others lives and going into debt with them and focusing on your own goals.
